As deregulation of Ontario's Electricity market is now a reality, energy retailers will continue to be knocking on doors in an attempt to enlist the citizens of Orillia to sign a contract with them for the purchase of electricity. The Orillia Power Distribution Corporation is in no way affiliated with any electricity retailer.
Retailers must be licensed by the Ontario Energy Board. A complete list of licensed retailers is available on the OEB's website at www.oeb.gov.on.ca.
What do I do if I am having problems with a retailer?
Licensed retailers must follow a code of conduct as set out by the OEB. If you are having trouble, you should first try to solve the problem with your retailer. Keep a record of who you have contacted and any responses.
If you are unable to resolve your concern with the company, you can contact the OEB on their toll free complaint line at 1-877-632-2727.
You are a valued customer of Orillia Power Distribution Corporation and we can't tell you what to do, but we can draw your attention to a few of the more important factors you should be aware of regarding any new contracts.
BASIC QUESTIONS TO ASK ELECTRICITY MARKETERS
- what's the name of the supplying company?
- do you have a license from the Ontario Energy Board and can you provide proof?
- do I have to pay a fee to switch?
- where does their energy come from?
- if the environment is an important consideration for you, ask if you can purchase renewable power such as wind, solar or hydro-electric
- what are the terms of the agreement, length of contract?
- when does the service begin?
- what's the price per kWh and will the price vary?
- how much less is that than today's current rate?
- how are savings calculated?
- how are they paid out, and when?
- are there any signing bonuses or other promotions?
- how is the contract canceled?
Be a smart shopper .... when an electricity retailer shows up at your door, make an informed decision.
Your current electricity utility will continue to deliver the power to your home, whether you switch the company you buy it from or not. You can still count on the same dependable service as always.
